Amatul Basit is a Senior Building Designer and Code Consultant with more than 20 years of experience in building design, municipal building regulation, inspection, approvals, and code compliance. At Sky Sight Inc., she is actively involved in the review and development of building designs while providing senior technical guidance on Ontario Building Code requirements, permit documentation, municipal processes, and regulatory matters. She works closely with the firm’s architectural design team throughout project development, reviewing design solutions, contributing ideas, identifying code implications, and helping develop practical approaches that balance design objectives with regulatory requirements.
Amatul’s extensive municipal experience provides her with a strong understanding of how building design, construction, and regulatory requirements are interpreted and administered in practice. She advises on code compliance, permit requirements, applicable municipal by-laws, consultant documentation, and technical issues that may affect project approvals or construction. Her involvement early in the design process helps project teams identify potential concerns before submission and develop coordinated solutions that respond to both client objectives and regulatory requirements.
Her municipal career has given her extensive experience administering and interpreting the Ontario Building Code and Building Code Act, reviewing permit and consultant documentation, conducting inspections, resolving non-conformities, and advising architects, engineers, designers, owners, builders, and other stakeholders. She also brings substantial experience in staff supervision and management, regulatory enforcement, preparation and presentation of matters before the Building Code Commission, and implementation of the Building Code Act through legal proceedings.
In her long-standing role with the Town of Ajax, Amatul serves as a Supervisor and Senior Building Inspector. Her responsibilities include overseeing building-inspection activities and staff, supporting Part 3 permit review, conducting inspections of large and complex buildings, reviewing consultant reports, participating in site meetings, resolving code-compliance issues, and coordinating with Fire, By-Law, and other municipal departments and external agencies. She also advises design professionals and owners on the resolution of Building Code deficiencies, construction issues, and regulatory requirements.
Amatul has also developed and authored municipal operating procedures and work instructions relating to building approvals, legal actions, building damage investigations, site inspections, after-hours inspection services, and building by-laws. Her experience includes managing enforcement matters, assisting with Building Code Act orders and legal processes, appearing in court in connection with building-related matters, and helping establish consistent interpretation and application of building regulations within municipal operations.
Amatul holds a Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Engineering & Technology, Lahore, and maintains Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing qualifications across multiple Building Code categories. Her combination of architectural-design knowledge and extensive authority-side experience strengthens the firm’s ability to anticipate permitting issues, interpret complex requirements, and navigate municipal approval processes throughout the design and construction of a project.]
